Flower Spotlight: Ranunculus
This week’s flower spotlight will be focused on a favorite bloom among brides and florists alike: Ranunculus
Design
The flower Ranunculus are secondary focal and accent whimsy blooms (what does this mean? Click here). The best thing about Ranunculus is the many shapes and colors it comes in. I love Japan varieties as well as the famous variety, Butterfly Ranunculus. The size and shape will determine how I use them in an arrangement. For most of the varieties, the Ranunculus head will be round in shape and have a small to medium sized floral head. This will play a role in creating dimension and depth. For Butterfly Ranunculus, they have a tall, whimsical shape that can create height and movement in a bouquet or arrangement.
Season
Luckily we can get most varieties of Ranunculus all year long. However, they come in the best colors and varieties in the springtime.
Temperament
Ranunculus are great blooms that can handle both hot and cold weather and seem to only get better with age. Sometimes during their off season they need a few extra days to open fully.
