Wedding Tips | Breaking Away From Tradition

Newly engaged couples often refer to their parents for help and advice for their wedding planning. Most likely, their parents have done this before and can give great insight on what they need to plan for and on how the wedding day is going to go.

Although I would never discount the value that my brides parents bring to wedding planning, the trends and times have evolved and changed. There are new and creative ways to bring special and intimate moments throughout your wedding day.

Hiring wedding vendors that are up to date with trends and are experienced is crucial. If I could give any advice to my brides, it would be exactly that. Your wedding vendors have done this before (it is their job after all) and they will know what works best.

I’ve asked Jillian from Jillian Francois Photography and Design, to give us some insight into why going traditional, like our parents, may not be the best route to go.

“A first look with Dad before the ceremony is a must, but I highly recommend ditching the tradition of your partner seeing you for the first time at the alter. Plan to do a first look with your partner before your ceremony. There are TONS of ways to create a unique and intimate reveal. Not only can you let your creativity really let loose on the HOW of the reveal, but it also creates a really intimate moment with your future forever. Your wedding day is so chaotic from start to finish, you won’t really have any moments alone with the other person this whole day is about. Doing a first look before the ceremony can make your photography experience much more efficient! It creates less time needed during formal photos, and more time for you to enjoy the actual event, the one you have spent too many hours perfecting.”

Even though I’m a florist, I personally love it when my couples do a first look. I agree with Jillian, that it creates a special and intimate memory that you will have forever of your partner. Even though tradition says otherwise, “first looks” have become more and more popular with our couples and we often find that those photos are their favorite from the entire day!

From Jillian– “Film is how I started, so I feel like it’s shaped my vision of photography for the true art form it is. While I can do ANY type of photography, I find myself drawn to a more photojournalistic approach, images with people and creating custom piece of art that really tells a story of you and your loved ones.  The human connection is something that takes a special kind of person to capture through imagery, a lover of love is a must. Weddings are my favorite event to shoot, hands down. The emotion and thoughtfulness put into every wedding is always unique and beautiful, and having the trust of others to create the images they’ve always wanted is truly an undertaking. I am a bit like an air traffic controller, I ensure everyone is on the same page to not only take your pictures, but to ensure you have the best and most flawless day possible.  I thrive in that trust.”

Highly recommend Roots Floral Design - absolutely beautiful!

“Kaytee is an absolute GEM! She has so much passion and care for what she does, that you feel like she's a friend more than a vendor. She walks you through each step of the floral process with organization, examples, cost, and detail -- all things that make my detail-oriented heart happy. The end result far exceeded anything we could have hoped for or imagined. ALL. THE. GREENERY. Future brides, run, don't walk to Roots for your wedding. From start to finish, she took care of every single floral need to make our day positively beautiful.”

FROM START TO FINISH, SHE TOOK CARE OF EVERY SINGLE FLORAL NEED.

"Kaytee became so much more than a vendor for us. The first time I met her I felt as though I met a long lost friend. She was the very first vendor I chose for the wedding (even before the venue) and she lived up to all my expectations and went above and beyond.  Each time I met with her I felt confident that she completely comprehended my wants and would fashion them into something that looks put together, yet natural. The day-of she silently transformed a bland rustic space into an enchanting, romantic barn. I couldn't have asked for anything more beautiful or unique."

"Kaytee was so great to work with!!! I provided her with some floral inspirations from Pinterest and Instagram but gave her a lot of free rein coming up with the flowers for our wedding and she went above and beyond expectations. Our photographer was obsessed with all the bouquets and we got so many great pictures of them! She did such a good job making my smaller budget work to make high impact arrangements. She's also the sweetest person to be around!"
