Wedding Flower Mistakes All Couples Should Avoid

While you can take a look through all of the amazing floral design work we’ve done for couples in the past on our blog, sometimes it’s also helpful to know which decisions you shouldn’t make when it comes to your bouquet, centerpieces or floral arrangements. Here’s a few helpful tips to watch out for when planning your wedding-day flowers.

Selecting Flowers or Colors that Don’t Match

Whether you have an elegant and vintage wedding venue, a colorful wedding-day style, or a truly unique theme for your big day, you should have an applicable bouquet and other florals to go with your setting and color palette. Although there are ways to be eye-catching, it’s far easier to accidentally go overboard and go too far outside the box. Talk with your wedding florist to make sure you find the right balance of different and cohesive.

Avoiding Flowers and Greenery Altogether

Sure, we may be a bit biased, but even the most modern or industrial weddings need a bit of softening for your guests’ eyes. If you aren’t big on really large floral installations, try accenting your wedding’s inanimate design subjects with small petals, berries, or carefully placed greenery.

And the Opposite: Using Flowers Everywhere

There’s a time and a place for everything, and flowers aren’t an exception to this rule. Just as no flower arrangements can come across with the wrong sentiment for your big day, too many flowers may be overwhelming for your guests — and even yourself. Don’t assume that flowers need to be placed everywhere around your ceremony and reception space. You might want to think about choosing specific areas to focus on when decorating with flower arrangements, or doing a mix of tables with larger flowers and tables with smaller ones.

Being Rigid Instead of Flexible

A key thing to remember is that flowers and greenery are affected by the seasons. Although some flowers can be ordered slightly earlier or later than their natural season, blooms ordered out of season may either be completely unavailable or hard to find (and therefore: expensive). Talk with your florist about the style or look you want if your ideal flowers won’t be in season for your big day, and there may be some fantastic alternatives if you’re willing to be flexible.

Not Communicating with the Florist

This mistake can be detrimental. If you aren’t open and honest about the style, setting, venue or budget for your big day with your wedding florist, this can lead to a variety of problems that will only stress you out down the road. Start with an open path of communication, and be sure to ask questions from day one.

Using Dyed Flowers

Something not every couple knows about can quickly end up being a wedding disaster: dyed wedding flowers. Although you may have a particular flower you love but want it in an unnatural color, you may risk the chance of dyed flowers staining your dress, your bridesmaid dresses and/or your groomsmen’s suits. Stick with flowers that naturally come in the colors you’re looking for to be on the safe side!

Purchasing Flowers from Non-Floral Shops

Whether you’re thinking it’d be an easy and less-expensive option to purchase flowers from a standard store, such as your local grocery store or convenient shop, you may lose out more than you gain. Many grocery store flowers are often not well taken care of, so they’ll likely die sooner and may not hold up throughout an entire wedding day. It’s best to leave your flower needs with a professional.

“Kaytee is an absolute GEM! She has so much passion and care for what she does, that you feel like she's a friend more than a vendor. She walks you through each step of the floral process with organization, examples, cost, and detail -- all things that make my detail-oriented heart happy. The end result far exceeded anything we could have hoped for or imagined. ALL. THE. GREENERY. Future brides, run, don't walk to Roots for your wedding. From start to finish, she took care of every single floral need to make our day positively beautiful.”

FROM START TO FINISH, SHE TOOK CARE OF EVERY SINGLE FLORAL NEED.

"Kaytee became so much more than a vendor for us. The first time I met her I felt as though I met a long lost friend. She was the very first vendor I chose for the wedding (even before the venue) and she lived up to all my expectations and went above and beyond.  Each time I met with her I felt confident that she completely comprehended my wants and would fashion them into something that looks put together, yet natural. The day-of she silently transformed a bland rustic space into an enchanting, romantic barn. I couldn't have asked for anything more beautiful or unique."

"Kaytee was so great to work with!!! I provided her with some floral inspirations from Pinterest and Instagram but gave her a lot of free rein coming up with the flowers for our wedding and she went above and beyond expectations. Our photographer was obsessed with all the bouquets and we got so many great pictures of them! She did such a good job making my smaller budget work to make high impact arrangements. She's also the sweetest person to be around!"
